Home / Telecom / mobile / Motorola Updates Moto E, Moto G And Moto X To Android 4.4.4 In India Motorola Updates Moto E, Moto G And Moto X To Android 4.4.4 In India

When Motorola merged with Google, one thing that everyone hoped was that from thereon, Motorola will start updating its phones at a faster pace. With the launch of Moto X and its minimal Android layer, this belief gained strength and soon, we could see that Motorola started updating its phones at a faster pace than any other Manufacturer out there.
Even its lower end phones, Motorola G and even Moto E launched with Kitkat and were promised fast updated.
Motorola has kept on its promise and Motorola India tweeted recently that all its phones will be getting Android 4.4.4.

By doing this, Motorola bypasses the 4.4.3 update. This is a good thing too as the new version is out there and there is no use to take two step process unlike what some other companies have been culprit of doing.
The update will come over the air (OTA) and users will get notification when the update is available for their phone. It will be done in batches therefore people should be getting these in a few days.
The size of the update will be around 50-100 MB depending on the mobile phone. It should include stability, security and framework fixes as well as include the new dialer and OpenSSL related fixes.
While your phone should automatically intimate you about the update if anyone wishes to check it can be done in Settings > About Phone > Software Update.
The updates by Motorola are swift and more importantly, available for all its phones. It obviously doesn’t beat Nexus but that is simply because of the first update advantage that Nexus line up will always have. However, with Motorola updating Moto E with such swiftness shows their realization on the importance of updating the phones.
If Motorola updates all the three phones to Android L (when it launches), it will gain a tremendous user base especially for Moto E and Moto G in developing countries. The phones are already selling like hot cakes and have been sold out multiple times on Flipkart (where they exclusively are sold). With quick updates and decent service, Motorola might hold the key to rivaling if not beating Samsung.
The only threat these phones might have is from the Android One initiative that intends to reach even more users with updated Android version. However, the brand name of Motorola should be good enough to dominate the market if they play their cards well.

Sandisk Introduces World’s First 128 GB microSD Card

Imagine saying to someone 15 years ago that you can hold a million books or 16 hours of HD video/ 7500 songs or 3000 photos on your finger nail, he would have laughed his heart out. But not anymore as SanDisk has made it possible now.
SanDisk has introduced world’s first 128 GB microSD memory card, which can easily store any one of these above mentioned data quantity quite easily. This can be termed as a huge leap for technology as 10 years ago, world’s first microSD card was introduced which had a memory space of just 128 MB.

Target: Android Users

SanDisk has played their card quite well, as they have targeted only Android users for this storage extravaganza. The Class 10 SDXC UHC-1 Sandisk Ultra card will deliver twice the speed of a standard SD card, and has been designed specifically for Android smartphones and tablets. In fact, it will have compatibility with any device capable of interfacing with an SDXC card.
SanDisk Ultra microSDXC card works by stacking 16 memory dies vertically, with each thinner than a single hair making room for more storage as 128 GB has been allowed to fit inside the confined space of a MicroSD card which is not bigger than a fingernail. See how this chip was made.
“With 128GB of removable storage, consumers will enjoy the freedom to capture and save whatever they want on a smartphone or tablet, without worrying about running out of storage space”, said Susan Park who is Sandisk director of retail product marketing.
The super microSD card provides Class 10 performance for recording full HD video. Additionally, the card is:
  • Water Proof
  • Temperature Proof
  • X-Ray Proof
  • Magnet Proof
  • Shock Proof
It also comes with a SD Adaptor for digital camera compatibility.
Earlier in the month, SanDisk had announced world’s fastest microSD card: Sandisk Extreme Pro SDHC/SDXC UHS-II Card which can deliver 250MBps data transfer speed in burst mode and 280MBps under optimum conditions. FujiFilm was very quick to adapt as they announced the first digital camera: X-T1 which is capable of syncing with UHS-II standard.
SanDisk has already contacted Guinness Book of World Records for recording these two feats.

Microsoft Now Offering Free Windows For Any Device Less Than 9 Inch

Microsoft has done something which even they never had assumed: Free Windows!
Few hours back during Microsoft’s Build 2014 event in The Moscone Center, San Francisco, CA, they have officially announced that Windows would be free for mobile, tablets and the Internet of Things.
Last month, we had reported that Microsoft may offer free Windows in future, as some leading technology sites had speculated about this possibility. But now with this official announcement, it is clear that Microsoft has transformed itself and is willing to go for the free route as well.
As per the announcement, Microsoft will provide free Windows to any device which isless than 9 inch. This is certainly a big change in the strategy of a company which thrived on the usage of licensed software all through these years. This announcement was done by Terry Myerson, who heads the Operating System division inside Microsoft.

One special consideration here: Although Microsoft has announced that Windows would be free, the end users won’t be able to download it and start using it on their mobiles or tablets. This free option is only available for the hardware manufacturers who are planning to create and sell devices based on Windows OS.
Tech specialists are stating that this is a move which Microsoft had to make, considering the challenges thrown in by Android, which is a open source OS.
Anyone can download Android and use it as per their wishes, without spending a penny. And this open source movement by Android has enabled them to become the most popular Operating system for mobile and tablets.
Microsoft understands this concept of open source operating system has helped Google to own the entire ecosystem; using which they have promoted their search engine, application marketplace and more such services.
Another masterstroke which Microsoft has played with this move is the focus on Internet of Things.
As per recent reports, more than 26 billion devices would be interconnected via Internet of Things by 2020, and this represents a huge mind blowing opportunity for a company like Microsoft. Most probably, the same code which runs Windows 8 can be used to run such interconnected devices on Internet of Things as well. Although Microsoft says that this can only run mobile apps and not desktop software.
On the same hand, the company has announced that they are working on a new system to build apps which can be run on mobiles, desktops and Xbox; which means that the gap is slowly closing.

Tata Docomo Brings Youtube Mobile Streaming @ Rs 9

YouTube has tied up with telecom operator Tata Docomo to introduce the first-of-its-kind online video streaming plan in India. You must be thinking that such plans already exist in our country where people pay a subscription fees and get access to unlimited videos. Well, do these videos happen to be from YouTube? The answer is ‘No’. You still need to pay for data charges (if you are connecting via mobile internet) for videos you watch!

Prepaid users can now avail a new recharge pack, aptly titled ‘YouTube Recharge’, for as little as Rs. 9. For the said amount, users get 100 MB of video surfing on YouTube and Apalya Technologies’ Live TV service. The pack expires in 24 hours. Fret not, for there are higher rung plans as well. Rs. 19 gets you 150 MB of access for a period of 3 days, whereas Rs. 39 takes the time period to one week and the free data usage to 300 MB.

If you compare these plans to a regular 3G pack, you will quickly come to the conclusion that Tata Docomo is offering a much more VFM (value for money) recharge pack here. Rs. 100 gets you 300 MB of 3G data, whereas here you get 300 MB worth of YouTube videos and Live TV streaming for less than half the price (Rs. 39).
YouTube’s Director of Content Partnerships and Operations, Asia Pacific, says ”This is part of our efforts to make video content more affordable to a large base of mobile Internet users in the country. This is the first of its kind partnership in India.”
Anand Agrawal, Tata Docomo Head of Data and Mobile VAS, says that offering cheap plans for accessing online videos will enable more and more users to access the same. As per reports, 3.7 billion videos are watched online every month in India. This figure is expected to bloat up quickly with the introduction of such plans, especially if other Indian telecom operators such as Airtel, Vodafone also jump in with their own similar ‘Youtube Recharge’ packs
Lastly, if in case you are wondering how long that 100 MB of data is going to last, the Rs. 9 you spend will get you access to 240p content for around 20-30 minutes. While the numbers seem low, most people only use their phones to watch short, viral or funny videos while on-the-go. Perhaps Tata Docomo and other Indian operators will also introduce similar plans for other services such as Vine and instagram in the near future.

Google Adsense Custom Ad Sizes , google ad

The Google Adsense team had contacted us a few weeks back and asked to remove the custom js ad units which we were running on our network of blogs. These were the ads which we were allowed to run on a few selected number of blogs depending on the traffic and the demographics. We have been running custom ad sizes on our blogs which generally were the single ad units but with different fonts and sizes and which would not totally look like a advertisement. All of the sudden someone from Google had contacted us with the following email

Dear Publisher,
We are currently in the process of migrating publishers from Custom JavaScript formats to standard iframes. By moving publishers over, we are able to offer more features, innovating faster and more efficiently. As such your Custom JavaScript publisher features will be turned off on 6th December 2013.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
For technical questions and troubleshooting, please send an email to our AdSense support team while logged into your Google account.
Best regards,

We were quite confused and when we got in touch with them, we were told that the results from the custom ad units were not par with the default ad units and hence Google is taking a decision to stop serving ads through this option. This was a kind of shock because we have had done a few tests and found that the custom ad units were generally giving us better results, but now are told that its actually bad for the publishers and hence we should switch back to the default ad units by Dec 6th

Mumbai Metro Brings Free Wi-Fi Access On Trains And Station, And It Works Quite Well Too!

Mumbai Metro was flagged off last month to much fanfare, and many young-smartphone-wielding metro travelers were waiting for one thing that was promised – Internet connectivity!
And now their wait is over. Mumbai Metro has now started offering free Wi-Fi access of Metro stations and trains. And based on the initial feedback received from some metro travelers, the wi-fi connectivity works quite well too.
Earlier today, Mumbai Metro also made an official announcement about the same on their Twitter account.

Interestingly, the announcement has come about when #MumbaiMetro is trending for all the wrong reasons – the metro coaches have been leaking water due to incessant rains that Mumbai has witnessed since yesterday.
Some of the early users who used Wi-Fi have some good words to say about the speed and connectivity on the trains.
